SHUTEN-DOUJI
Shuten means to drink a large amount of Sake. It is a story of the red demon (Oni) of the drunkard named Syuten. Raiko Minamotono received emperor's order to destroy Syuten. Then Raiko & four his strong servants Defeated Syuten and his servants.

MIMINASHI-HOICHI
It is a story of the lute player named Hoichi who was deaf. He was skillful in the performance of the last fight of Heike family and Genji family named the Battle of Dan-no-ura. He performed in front of the revenant of Heike family one day. The priest who knew it wrote Buddhist sutra in his body. However he forgot to write on his ears. The priest who knew the happening wrote Buddhist sutra in his body. However, the priest forgot to write on his ears to protect him from the revenant of Heike family. The messenger of revenant took his ears and people called Hoichi without the ears (Mimi).

YUKI-ONNA
It is a story of the incarnation of the snow named Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). Yuki-Onna that killed his father in a mountain lodge on the past snowy day appeared in front of the grown-up son as beautiful woman several years later. They became married and the baby was born. When he told the story of the father's death, Yuki-Onna showed one's true colors, and she was angry and left from him.

KAGUYA-HIME
It is a story of Kaguya-Hime (Kaguya-Princess) that was born from the bamboo. Kaguya-Hime that grew up beautifully was a messenger from the moon. Kaguya-Hime was not obstructed by 2000 emperors' soldier and returned to the moon in front of the grandpa and the grandmother who were watching it.

MUSASHI MIYAMOTO (1584 - 1645)
Musashi Miyamoto is a master swordsman of the whole country matchless of well-known. Musashi is told that there was no defeat during his life of 60 years. The story of the fight in Ganryu-Jima (island) (*1) with Kojiro Sasaki is very famous. There are a lot of uncertain points of the real image though it is a person known
by the story and the novel. Also in his birth home, there are various guesses such as Harima (Hyogo-ken), Bisaku (Okayama-ken) and other. Moreover, the fight with a lot of master swordsmen can be confirmed only by about ten in present material. The story after the fight of Ganryu-jima told when he was 19 years old is the uncertainty of most parts of his life. He is told roaming around a Japanese country for the training of further samurai. Also he is told that the temporary employment with Hanshu-Akashi and the work of Machi-wari (*2) was done. Also he is told employment to Ogasawara Family of Buzen-Kokura and participation to repress Shimabara-no-Ran (*3). He became a guest in the Kumamoto-Hosokawa clan in the fall of life. He shut himself up in the rock-cave named Reigando, spent every day of a silence alone, and wrote Gorin-sho. This book is read now for lesson of sword technique and philosophy book to know Bushi-do (Japanese chivalry) as a esoteric technique book to a lot of people now.

*2 Machi-wari
It is a city design done so that the lord may rule the territory. It readjusted the samurai area, the tradesman area, and the temple area, etc. centering on the castle.

*3 Shimabara-no-Ran
It is a revolt that Shiro Amakusa who leader for Christian and farmer caused the oppression of Shimabara lord's Matsukura Family from 1637 to 38. They fought against the shogunate during half a year but they were defeated.

7 SAMURAI BENKEI MUSASHIBO HISTORICAL FIGURE

BENKEI MUSASHIBOU (? - 1189)
There is recognition that Benkei Musashibou who was servant of Yoshitsune Minamotono is imaginary person in order to information is a little to prove real existence. However, the explanation of Benkei can be confirmed in the historiography (Azuma-Kagami (*1)). Therefore it seems to be certain that there was a servant named Benkei. Benkei an original Zou-hei (monk soldier) (*2) of Hiei-mountain. However Benkei had the wish to deprive of 1000 swords with the honor and appeared in the town in Kyoto every night to deprive of 1000 swords by fighting against a lot of samurai on Gojo-oohashi (Bridge). Benkei met Yoshitsune who was young and named Ushiwaka-maru on the bridge at night to deprive of the last one sword to realize wish. Benkei of the giant thought that he easily defeated Yoshitsune. However, Benkei was defeated at Yoshitsune's special ability that taught the fighting technique by the Tengu (long-nosed goblin). Then Benkei gave up to him and became a servant of him. Afterwards, Benkei moved and fought at various places while following guarding Yoshitsune. I accomplished the mission of defending Yoshitsune with his life. The above-mentioned story is a description of the Yoshitsune-Ki (*3) & other written in the age afterwards. Therefore, it might be a creation. However, it is made to be impressed at his end that was stabbed the whole body to the arrow to protect his load Yoshitsune, and died while standing. It called Benkei no Tachi-Ohjo.

*1 Azuma-Kagami
This is a diary style chronicle that writes various events from rising in arms by Yoritomo Minamotono on 1180 to 1266. This is the most important material in the Kamakura period.

*2 Zou-hei
Soldier in the buddhist temple in Hiei-mountain etc. that appeared in about the tenth century. Soldier for temple to become independent, and to defend oneself to appeals strongly directly to the shogunate. The shogunate suppressed this. However, it continued to the end in Edo period.

*3 Yoshitsune-ki
This unknown author's war history chronicle was made in Muromachi period. The life of the tragedy of Yoshitsune was drawn in expression of feelings. It became the origin of the Yoshitsune legend afterwards.

7 SAMURAI YOSHITSUNE MIYAMOTONO USHIWAKAMARU HISTORICAL FIGURE

YOSHITSUNE MINAMOTONO (1159 - 1189)
Yoshitsune Minamotono is younger brother of Yoritomo Minamotono who established the Kamakura Shogunate. The name when he was a child was called Ushiwakamaru. When he was a child, Yoshitomo who was his father was killed by the Taira family. Therefore, he hid himself at Kurama-dera (temple) in the north of Kyoto (rakuhoku) and moved to Oushu (*1), and was brought up by Fujihara Family (*1). He participated in the battle of Yoshinaka Kino and had to subdue Taira family to help Yoritomo that was elder brother's rising in arms after he
had grown up and he put out a great result of the battle. Yoshitune has the legend that he was raised by the Tengu (long-nosed goblin) in the mountain of Kurama
when he was a child. Therefore, the Hiyodori-goe (*2)technique to run down from the top of cliff and made a surprise attack on the enemy and the Hassou-tobi (*3) technique to jump between ships with over ability of human during the battle of Genji vs. Heike (Genpei-Gassen) are handed down. Yoshitsune might have been watched to Yoritomo who was a true elder brother for the appearance of superhuman samurai. Therefore, Yoshitsune was tracked done and was subjugated. Yoshitune ran away to Oushu with despair and he was encircled while concealing himself, and committed suicide. The end of his tragedy so that destined it unhappily though it was a man of merit who revived Genji Family was pitied by a lot of people and he was handed down as a young nobleman of the tragedy until the future.

*1 Ohshu Fujiwara Family
A powerful clan who made power in the east provinces. They supported Yoshiie Minmotono & other in the battle of Mae9nen/Ato3nen and prospered based on Hiraizumi. They ruined being attacked Yoritomo in the age of Yasuhira Fujiwara that was the fourth generation.

*2 Hiyodori-Goe
This technique was used with Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. Yoshitune saw the deer that descended ran in the cliff that horse can not descended ran. And Yoshitune decided to desecend ran due to horse and deer are same animal that have 4 legs. And, there is an anecdote that says Yoshitsune it having made the surprise attack succeed.

*3 Hasso-Tobi
This technique was used with Battle of Dan-no-Ura. There is an anecdote that says Yoshitsune seems to be killed by skilled samurai of Heike Family and he jumped in the ship of military forces of me away by 18 feet momentarily having become it.

7 SAMURAI RYOMA SAKAMOTO KAIENTAI HISTORICAL FIGURE

RYOMA SAKAMOTO (1835 - 1867)
Ryuoma Sakamoto appeared in Tosa Clan as an 2nd son of Goshi (soldier) of Tosha Clan. When he was young, he trained Ouri-ryu Hei-jyutsu (soldier technique) and he mastered Hokushin-Itto-ryu (*1) in Edo later.
Ryoma participated in Tosa-Kinno-Toh (*2) at first, and became the loyal supporter of the Emperor. However, he escaped the clan afterwards. Ryoma met Kaishu Katsu and other while he traveled around the country. And,he came to have thought of opening the country to the world. Ryoma established the company that named Shachu (Kaientai at later) for the marine transportation and the trade in Kameyama, Nagasaki. Also Ryoma mediated the conclusion for Saccho-domei for Satsuma & Choshu that were conflicting at the same time. So he became the key mover to make the Ishin (restoration succeed). He planned 8 planes of modern multistory unified country (Senchu-Hassaku). He proposed the restoration of the imperial rule (Taisei-Houkan). However, Ryoma was attacked by the assassin and had been killed on 2nd floor in Oumi-ya, Kyoto immediately before the plan was achieved. Age at death:33 years old. Ryoma was exchanged with Shinsaku Takasugi, Kaishu Katsu, Takamori Saigo, Takayoshi Kido etc. who were samurai in east and west where they tried to change Japan. Ryoma solved the problem of difficult politics by a bright, optimistic character. In the end of shogunate of confusion, his behavior that kept chasing the dream in a new age, is loved by still a lot of fans today.

*1 Hokushin-Itto-ryu
It is a sect of Sword technique with Itto-ryu that Shusaku Chiba started. Genbu-kan Dojo (school) of one of the Hokushi-Itto-ryu is assumed to be one of three major Edo-Dojo. The Dojo became popular for be praised with about 3000 students or more.

*2 Tosa-Kinno-Toh
It was one of loyal supporter of the Emperor that organized with Zuisan Takechi of the Tosa clan. It conflicted with Yodo Yamauchi (domain lord of Tosa clan) who supported the union of the emperor and the samurai (Kobu-gattai).

7 SAMURAI TOSHIZOU HIJIKATA SHINSENGUMI HISTORICAL FIGURE

TOSHIZOU HIJIKATA (1835 - 1869)
Toshizou Hijikata appeared in Sekita-mura, Tama-gun, Bu-shu as an youngest child of Hijikata Family who is wealthy farmer. It went out to service to the draper when Hijikata was young. However, he did not last long business for the boy who yearned to the samurai. Sword technique was only trained after he had returned to home. Hijikata visited Shieikan (*1) and got acquainted with Isami Kondo and other by the give lessons of sword technique. Hijikata has progressed of sword technique and participated in Roushi-gumi that recruited by the shogunate. Afterwards, it became formation member of Shinsengumi. Hijikata was severe with the discipline as subleader of Shinsengumi. Hijikata worked effectively to eradicate the extremists who be a slogan "Revere the Emperor and expel the Foreigners" (sonnou joui). However, he returned Edo after it had been defeated in the battle of Toba-Fusimi. Then Hijikata separated from Kondo who showed the resignation. Hijikata moved the place of battle to Utsunomiya, Aizu, Sendai. Hijikata did not give it up though the Ouu row clan surrendered and then joined the old shogunate army that led by Takeaki Enomoto, and landed on Hokkaido. He demonstrated given clever strategist, and contributed to the establishment of Ezo-Republic (*2). However, it was a dream momentarily. The Hakodate war (*3) was the last fight. The bullet penetrated to Hijikata's chest while moving to rescue his will and Hijikata died on the horse. Age at death:35 years old.

*1 Shieikan
Shieikan is Tennenrishin-ryu dojo that exists in Edo-Ichigatani. Shusuke (The third generation of Tennenrishin-ryu) of the father-in-law of Isami Kondo opened the dojo in Tenpo 10th (1839).

*2 Ezo-Republic
Shinsengumi attacked and caught the extremists who be a slogan "Revere the Emperor and expel the Foreigners" (sonnou joui) in Ikedaya (Kawara-machi, Sanjyo, Kyoto) on June 5th, 1864 (Genji 1st).

*3 Hakodate war
The samurai of the shogunate fought with the samurai of Satsuma and Choshu at Toba-Fushimi of Kyoto outskirts in January, 1868 (Keioh 1st). Shinsengumi also entered the war as a shogunate army.

7 SAMURAI ISAMI KONDO SHINSENGUMI HISTORICAL FIGURE

ISAMI KONDO (1834 - 1868)Shinsengumi kept the sincerity to the shogunate under the flag of MAKOTO (Sincerity). The Kyoku-cho (agency head) is Isami Kondo. Isami appeared in Kamiishihara-mura, Tama-gun, Bu-shu as an 3rd son of Hisajiro Miyakawa who is farmer. When he was 16 years old, he became the adopted son of Syusuke Kondo who opened Shieikan that is Dojo (school) of Tennenrishin-ryu (*1) in Edo-Ichigatake and succeeded to the fourth generation of Tennenrishin-ryu. 2 years later, He participated with the descendant of Shieikan in Roushi-gumi that recruited by the shogunate. After Roushi-gumi had arrived at Kyoto (Jyoraku), they were ordered the Edo return at once by strategy of Hachiro Kiyokawa (*2). However Kondo and other would organize Shinsengumi for protection for Katamori Matsudaira as Kyoto guardian (Syugo-shoku), and started the guard of Kyoto. Afterwards, he seized the initiative by holding group of Kamo Serizawa (*3) who was conflicting in the Shinsengumi, and he became top of name and reality both Shinsengumi. He was Sabaku-ha (sect) that defended the shogunate. however, he also the controversialist of Sonnou (Revere the Emperor), therefore he became a center that mentally adjusted Shinsengumi to one. He immediately returned to Edo after starting the Boshin-senso (war) (*4), led the Koyochinbutai (*5), and aimed at coming back. However, he did not obtain military results and surrendered to imperial forces, then he was decapitated in Edo-Itabashi. Age at death:35 years old.

*1 Tennenrishin-ryu
It is a Sword technique sect that Kuranosuke Kondo (Oumi) founded at the latter term of the Edo Period. It has spread around Bushu Tama region. Isami Kondo is the fourth generation of Tennenrishin-ryu.

*2 Hachiro Kiyokawa
Samurai of "Revere the Emperor". He proposed the recruitment of Roushi-gumi to the shogunate. He went to Kyoto (Jyoraku) and he tried to keep "Revere the Emperor". However, he was ordered to return to Edo by the shogunate, and he was assassinated by the shogunate.

*3 Kamo Serizawa
He is samurai of "Reverer the Emperor" from Mito and participated in Roushi-gumi. He opposed the strategy of Hachiro Kiyokawa, and remained in Kyoto. And, he became the director (Kyoku-cho) of Shinsengumi. He was respect of defective behavior, and conflicted with Kondo , he was held by Kondo.

*4 Boshin-Senso (War)
This war is a war that the new government sect in Satsuma & Choshu and the old shogunate sect fought starting with Toba-Fushi war in January, 1866 (Keioh 4th). The damage of the war has extended to Tohoku and Hokkaido and it was concluded in the Hakodate war in 1869.

*5 Koyochinbutai
This force organized it so that Kondo that had returned to Edo might intercept new government troops in the Koshu district. The force failed though it tried to defend Kofu.

7 SAMURAI SOUJI OKITA SHINSENGUMI HISTORICAL FIGURE

SOUJI OKITA (1844 - 1868)
Okita Souji appeared in Edo as an eldest son of family of Hanshi (soldier) of shirakawa Clan. When he was a boy, Okita did training repeatedly as an apprentice of Shieikan (*1).
Okita was a senior pupil of Hijikata in Sheikan-dojo though Okita was younger than Hijikata. Okita was conferred full mastershipin in one's teens and worked as a head of juku also. Okita was praised as the expert of Sword technique. Sword technique of Okita was criticized with Isami Kondo (the originator) or more. Okita participated in Roushi-gumi. Afterwards, he became formation member of Shinsengumi. Okita worked effectively in the pandemonium place where Roushi of anti-Shogunate was assassinated. However, Okita lost the life by the one that was not the sword. Blood was vomited at the event of Ikedaya Affair (*2), and he fell in the sickness. Okita was tuberculosis. The condition has worsened day by day. He was already a condition of bedridden on deck to return to Edo after he had been defeated in the battle of Toba-Fusimi (*3). After he had returned to Edo, Okita was not able to fight with this will. He started the life for recuperation in Shengatake. Okita also shut the life of 25 years without knowing the death of Kondo who is the his master about one month later after Kondo surrendered to imperial force and had been decapitated in Edo-Itabashi.

*1 Shieikan
Shieikan is Tennenrishin-ryu(*4) dojo that exists in Edo-Ichigatani. Shusuke (The third generation of Tennenrishin-ryu) of the father-in-law of Isami Kondo opened the dojo in Tenpo 10th (1839).

*2 Ikedaya Affair
Shinsengumi attacked and caught the extremists who be a slogan "Revere the Emperor and expel the Foreigners" (sonnou joui) in Ikedaya (Kawara-machi, Sanjyo, Kyoto) on June 5th, 1864 (Genji 1st).

*3 the battle of Toba-Fusimi>
The samurai of the shogunate fought with the samurai of Satsuma and Choshu at Toba-Fushimi of Kyoto outskirts in January, 1868 (Keioh 1st). Shinsengumi also entered the war as a shogunate army.

*4 Tennenrishin-ryu
It is a Sword technique sect that Kuranosuke Kondo (Oumi) founded at the latter term of the Edo Period. It has spread around Bushu Tama region. Isami Kondo is the fourth generation of Tennenrishin-ryu.
